Allergies

Allergies are immune system reactions to substances that are typically harmless to most people. These substances, known as allergens, can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Allergies can affect various parts of the body, including the skin, eyes, respiratory system, and gastrointestinal tract.

  • Pollen: From trees, grasses, and weeds, leading to seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever).
  • Dust Mites: Common indoor allergen found in bedding, upholstered furniture, and carpets.
  • Pet Dander: Skin flakes, saliva, and urine from pets such as cats and dogs.
  • Mold: Found indoors and outdoors, thriving in damp environments.
  • Food: Common allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, milk, eggs, wheat, and soy.
  • Insect Stings: Venom from bees, wasps, hornets, and fire ants.

Allergic reactions can vary in severity and may include:

  • Respiratory Symptoms: Sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, coughing, wheezing.
  • Skin Reactions: Itchy, red, or swollen skin (eczema, hives), or dermatitis.
  • Eye Irritation: Itchy, watery, red eyes (allergic conjunctivitis).
  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain (food allergies).
  • Anaphylaxis: A severe, life-threatening allergic reaction with symptoms like swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing, rapid pulse, and a drop in blood pressure.
